Spring steel is a name given to a wide range of steels used in the manufacture of springs, prominently in automotive and industrial suspension applications. These steels are generally low-alloy manganese, medium-carbon steel or high-carbon steel with a very high yield strength. This allows objects made of spring steel to return to their original shape despite significant deflection or twisting.
Spring steel is often used because of its high yield strengths, resistance to deformation, and its ability to return to its original shape. Our spring steel and spring steel strips are available as heat-treatable annealed, which allows the forming to occur prior to the heat treatment, or heat treated, where the steel is previously hardened, tempered, or sprung. Our inventory of annealed spring steel can be easily formed, tempered, heat treated, blanked or shaped.

Benefits of Spring Steel
STRENGTH
Spring Steel is typically used because of its high yield strengths, resistance to deformation and its ability to return to its original shape.
RESISTANT
Precision Steel also carries large inventories of stainless spring strip steel. Stainless Spring steel is known for being resistant to water, environmental, and pollution exposure. With two main groups, stainless spring steel can either be austenitic or martensitic. The austenitic stainless spring steel strips like 301 and 302 are temper rolled for light springs versus the martensitic spring steels, such as the 420 stainless strips, that are heat treatable for high hardness and toughness and are typically used for hardened tools.
EXPERIENCE
At Precision Steel, our sales representatives are experts in spring steel products. Let us help you find the right spring steel for your application.
FLATNESS
It has not been practical to formulate flatness tolerances for cold rolled carbon spring steel to represent the range of widths and thicknesses and variety of properties produced in coils and cut lengths.
Our high-performance spring steels are used in applications requiring parts capable of reliably absorbing and re-exerting force. A good example of such applications are the spring diaphragms found in automobiles or the retractor springs in seat belt systems, which are tempered and re-rolled.
The elasticity of the spring steel plays an important role in the functionality of these dynamically highly loaded parts. It determines how much force the material is able to absorb without being permanently deformed. The yield strength represents the maximum force which the material can absorb and subsequently release while still returning to its original shape.
Yield strength is an important parameter which we are capable of calibrating to a precise degree thanks to our experience combining chemical composition, cold rolling and heat treatment. When it comes to spring steels, we are able to manufacture various high-performance materials with yield strengths (Rp0.2) of up to 2,800 MPa (406 ksi).
Our products withstand countless millions of loading and unloading cycles over the course of their service lives. In several cases, such as those described above, these parts perform safety-related functions. Get in touch with us to discuss exactly what you need. We will manufacture a customized spring steel to perfectly meet your project requirements.
